Dischi Fantom 02

_SL_4406Dischi Fantom is happy to announce its second release, Kreatur, Soundwalk Collective’s soundtrack to Sasha Waltz’s new choreography

Dischi Fantom presents Soundwalk Collective’s soundtrack to Sasha Waltz’s new choreography, Kreatur, premiered in June 2017 at Radialsystem V in Berlin and touring in Germany, Belgium, France and Spain in 2018. (For dates please check here).
Inhabiting the liminal spaces between different art forms is a central element in Sasha Waltz’s choreographies. In this new piece – carried out in collaboration with the fashion designer Iris van Herpen, the lighting designer Urs Schönebaum and Soundwalk Collective – the choreographer and her dancers investigate aspects of our existence set against the contemporary backdrop of a society divided by power and powerlessness, dominance and weakness, freedom and control, community and isolation.
The album contains a 4-page booklet with a conversation between Soundwalk Collective’s Stephan Crasneanscki and Sasha Waltz.
The compositions are based on field recordings collected at the Alcantara factory in Nera Montoro (Italy), clubs Arma17 (Moscow) and Berghain (Berlin), and Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen (the former Stasi prison in Berlin). The result is a musical abstraction of the resonance of these 20th-century buildings – with industrial machinery, factory acoustics, and echoes of their empty architectures.
“Each of these buildings is made of multiple layers of history, sleeping layers, each one with their own narrative. Through the act of recording and re-composing, we have re-awoken these narratives and memories that were left behind by their inhabitants, and held within the walls of these buildings.”
An international genre-bending group of artists-musicians, Soundwalk Collective (Stephan Crasneanscki, Simone Merli, and Kamran Sadeghi) bound in Manhattan to produce records, sound installations, and live performances. Often in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and writers.

SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE

The approach to composition of Soundwalk Collective (Stephan Crasneanscki, Simone Merli, and Kamran Sadeghi) combines ethnography, non-linear narrative, psychogeography, the observation of nature, and explorations in recording and synthesis, often carried out in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and writers. The source material of their works is always linked to specific locations, natural or artificial, and requires long periods of investigative travel and field work. Resulting in albums, sound installations and live performances.
Soundwalk Collective had solo shows at the Rubin Museum of Art (New York), District Six Museum (Cape Town), “Capo d’Arte”, Gagliano del Capo (Lecce, Italy), and in New York’s Times Square, where in April 2016 they mounted Jungle-ized, a large participative audio-visual installation.
Along the years, they performed at Triennale Teatro dell’Arte (Milan); Opéra de Lyon; CTM Festival (Berlin); KW Institute of Contemporary Art (Berlin); Volksbühne (Berlin); Novas Frequencias Festival (Rio De Janeiro); Strichka Festival (Kiev); Arma17 (Moscow); Barbican Centre (London); Berghain (Berlin); Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris); Florence Gould Hall (New York); Mobile Art by Zaha Hadid (Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York); MUDAM (Luxemburg); MuCEM (Marseilles); Museo Madre (Naples); National Museum of Singapore; New Museum (New York); TAP (Poitiers), and Villa de Noailles – Centre d’Art et de Culture Contemporain (Hyères).
In 2016 they released Killer Road (Bella Union/Sacred Bones Records), composed with Patti Smith and dedicated to singer Nico, and in 2017 Before Music There Is Blood (Apollo/R&S Records), which combines the sounds recorded in the yards and hallways of the conservatories of Naples, Saint Petersburg and Shanghai.
They are currently developing a project based on Jean-Luc Godard’s sound archive.
