Nicola Ratti for Parla Ascolta Guarda Fai, Triennale Milano
On Sunday, November 10th, we invited sound designer and composer Nicola Ratti to premiere his latest project Concerto per sistemi eccentrici su lunga durata, a six-hour sound performance conceived for the spaces of Triennale Milano, curated by Benedetta Pomini and Ilaria Speri of Fantom, with a lighting environment designed by Andrea Sanson.
A versatile musician in the Italian experimental electronic scene, Nicola Ratti dragged the visitors into a six-hour long and profound sound journey, a collective experience of semi-conscious observation and listening, thanks to the spatialization of sound from eight audio sources, and an immersive light environment animated live by Andrea Sanson. Slow scattered beats reverberate around the space, traversing and dissecting it. Transforming it into a system that takes shape through repetition and expansion, rebounding across the architecture and all that is within it. Space-time boundaries become blurred and confused. The atmosphere is disorienting, capable of disrupting and overturning our emotional and perceptive habits.
The performance, curated by Benedetta Pomini and Ilaria Speri of Fantom, took place as part of Parla Ascolta Guarda Fai, the interdisciplinary project curated by Davide Giannella and Fantom for Triennale Milano, and coordinated for Fantom by Selva Barni and Benedetta Pomini: a series of exhibitions, screenings, performances, installations and projects, which will inhabit the spaces of Palazzo dell’Arte until March 2020.
A musician and sound designer, Nicola Ratti has performed in Europe, North America, Russia and Japan, and his albums have been published by record labels Where To Now?, Boomkat Editions, Shelter Press, Room40, Students of Decay, Die Schachtel, Entr’acte, Senufo Editions, Holidays Records, Anticipate, and Preservation. Together with Giuseppe Ielasi, he is part of the collaborative project Bellows; and he is co-founder and curator at Standards, an experimental sound research project founded in 2015 in Milan. He is also co-founder at Frequente, an organization set up in 2016, devoted to sound and performance, and NeitherSound, a company which works in collaboration with artists to develop performances, theatre shows and audio-visual projects. Nicola Ratti lives in Milan and works as a director and sound engineer with Romeo Castellucci-Socìetas and as a musician and sound designer with Silvia Costa. His latest album, Continental, was published by Students of Decay in July 2019.
