Francesca Woodman: On Being an Angel

The exhibition ‘Francesca Woodman. On Being an Angel’, curated by Anna Tellgren and running at Moderna Museet through December 6th, gathers a selection of a hundred photographs and a video by Francesca Woodman. Featuring most of the American photographer’s thematic groups and series – such as Polka Dots (1976), the From Angel series (1977), Swan Song (1978), Charlie the Model (1976–77) and her large Caryatid (Study for a Temple Project, 1980) – the show provides a rich overview on Woodman’s intimate and surrealistic research on gender, representation and body. In Woodman’s active years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, many photographers who had worked with classic black and white photography were experimenting with other forms, pushing the documentary tradition towards more subjective projects. A selection of photographic works from the same period, coming from the Museum’s collection, complete the exhibition, putting Woodman’s contribution to the photographic language in context and expanding the perspective on her oeuvre.
