Fantom Magazine (2009-12)

“It is a very cold evening in New York, and I am longing for spring to arrive. My eyes wander to the latest issue of Fantom magazine, and voilà, my wish has been granted. The cover is a most beautiful photograph by Sandra Kantanen: blossoms over gushing water, in magnificent spring colors, with a lingering hint of winter. Fantom, a fairly new photography magazine, is diverse, free of art-speak, imaginatively edited, and filled with surprises. Its editors… created it to appeal to photographers, critics, gallerists, and decision-makers in the photography world. Each issue, lushly printed on beautiful stock, aims to create a dialogue between artists and photography lovers in a number of recurring features. In this issue’s “By Appointment Only,” the appointment is with Artur Walther, a devoted longtime New York photography collector, who converted his family home in his tiny hometown in Germany into a spectacular museum displaying his treasures. “Eye to Eye” presents two photographers in conversation, Giorgio Barrera and Joel Meyerowitz. I particularly love the “pop up” portfolio: Irina Polin’s sophisticated stills jump out as double pages here and there throughout the issue. The layouts often break the rules of traditional magazine design, which is refreshing. Best of all, alongside familiar greats, the magazine often introduces me to artists whose work I hadn’t known.
