Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam 2014
The third edition of Unseen Photo Fair just took place in Amsterdam, blessed by a sunny weather that warmed up the beautiful context of the Westergasfabriek.
Unseen, just like the name itself states, focuses on the promotion of undiscovered photography talents as well as unreleased works by established photographers. Together with a selection of over 50 international galleries and publishers, a rich schedule of talks, exhibitions and collateral events confirms the role of Unseen as the unique ‘fair with a festival flair’.
A colorful atmosphere surrounded the area, thanks to a site-specific installation by the official campaign artist Lorenzo Vitturi (Venice, 1980) and to the outdoors exhibition that accompanied the visitors through the entrance square, introducing the finalists of the 2014 Foam Talent.
Particularly notable was this year’s focus on Japan, with a beautiful group exhibition curated by Chihiro Minato and Shigeo Goto on the theme of the silent ‘animism’ that underlies contemporary Japanese photography (among the participants were Daido Moriyama, Daisuke Yokota, Nobuyoshi Araki, Shomei Tomatsu, Wataru Yamamoto and many others). A discussion panel followed, as well as a special reading room dedicated to Japanese photobooks only.
It was our pleasure to see, among the participants, a number of artists who had previously contributed to past issues of Fantom, such as Ruth van Beek, Lucas Blalock, JH Engström, Taisuke Kojama, Takashi Suzuki, Yumiko Utsu and Lukas Wassmann.
